Why Ecwid2Woo Was Built
Ecwid2Woo was built by Richard Hunting, founder of Metrotechs, while working with a client who had over 7,000 product pages, 11,000+ variations, and 30,000+ images — and no reliable way to migrate any of it to WooCommerce. Every available tool either failed at scale, lost image associations, couldn't handle variable products, or gave up silently partway through. None could resume after an interruption.
The Gap in Existing Tools
Paid migration services charged per-product fees that added up to hundreds or thousands of dollars for large catalogs. Free tools couldn't handle variable products reliably, lost image associations, or failed silently after a few hundred products. None could resume after an interruption, and none had any form of adaptive processing for different server environments.
Building for Reliability
The plugin was built with reliability as the top priority. Every design decision traces back to this principle. Smart Skip exists because migrations get interrupted. Self-healing batch processing exists because servers have variable performance. Image preservation exists because data loss is unacceptable. Stop Sync control exists because users need to be able to cancel operations without refreshing the page.
The result is a reliable migration architecture that's been tested with 7,000+ products across 70+ API calls — with auto server detection, progressive cooldowns, memory-aware batching, and up to 5 retry attempts per batch with exponential backoff.
Why Open Source
Ecwid2Woo is released under the GPL v2 license — free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. E-commerce migration is stressful enough without worrying about licensing fees. The WordPress ecosystem benefits from having high-quality, free migration tools available to everyone.
What's Next
The roadmap includes real-time sync via webhooks for automatic updates, incremental sync to update only changed products, advanced filtering based on categories or tags, scheduled sync at specified intervals, and multi-currency support. The plugin is actively developed and maintained.
